How to add and link a payment method

Add a payment method and check that it is linked to the Crisp workspace you want to pay for.

Whether you are replacing an expired card or handing billing to a teammate, this guide helps you connect the right method to the right subscription and keep future invoices with the correct billing owner.

Add the payment method

Add the payment method from the account that will manage billing. You must be a workspace owner to link it to that workspace.
The Crisp account that owns the payment method becomes the billing owner for the workspaces linked to it, which means only that account can access card details and invoices.

Adding a valid payment method can automatically attach it to workspaces you use that have no valid payment method and retry unpaid invoices. Check the affected workspaces, especially if you manage billing for several teams.

Open ⚙️ Settings → Billing → Cards.

Add the new payment method:

  1. Click Add new payment method.
  2. Choose the payment method you want to use.
  3. Complete the card or PayPal setup on the payment provider’s page, including any bank verification such as 3D Secure (3DS).
  4. Return to Crisp, complete the required billing details, and click Save & Finish when shown.

If your bank requires 3DS validation, complete the verification exactly as requested by your bank, usually through a mobile app, email, SMS, or banking page. If the verification page or window does not appear, try again from an incognito window because browser extensions can interfere with authentication.

The billing details added here are used on invoices. You can also add an invoice recipient email, such as your accountant's mailbox, so your accounting contact receives future invoice emails. The billing owner also receives them when invoice notifications are enabled.

Link the workspace to the payment method

A Crisp account can manage several workspaces and several payment methods. After adding a payment method, make sure the correct workspace is attached to it.

If you unlink a payment method, link its replacement before renewal to avoid an inactive subscription. Linking a new method can also retry unpaid invoices for this workspace.

In the workspace you want to update, open Settings → Workspace Settings → Billing.

In the workspace billing settings:

  1. Check the displayed payment method. If the correct method is already linked, leave it in place.
  2. To replace an existing method, unlink it and confirm Unlink Card.
  3. Select the new payment method from the available methods in your account. The selection saves automatically.

Crisp confirms when the payment method is linked. Once linked, Crisp uses it for that workspace’s subscription. Check Plans & Subscriptions for the renewal date and billing status.

Change the billing owner

The billing owner is the Crisp account that owns the payment method linked to the workspace. To change it, the new billing owner must first add a payment method from their own Crisp account.

To transfer billing ownership cleanly:

  1. Make sure the new billing owner is an Owner of the workspace.
  2. From their Crisp account, open Settings → Billing → Cards and add their payment method.
  3. Still using that account, open the target workspace’s Settings → Workspace Settings → Billing and link the new payment method.

Once the workspace is attached to the new payment method, that account becomes the billing owner. New invoices will be available from the new billing owner account, while older invoices may remain tied to the previous billing owner.

Troubleshoot payment and activation issues

If your payment method is marked as Invalid, check bank verification, expiration, and available funds. If the method is valid but the subscription still cannot be paid, check that the correct workspace uses it.

Removing a payment method affects every workspace linked to it. To change billing for only one workspace, unlink that workspace and link its replacement method instead.

3DS validation failed

The bank verification may not have completed correctly. Open Crisp in an incognito window, go to Settings → Billing → Cards, remove the card, then add it again.

This can help when a browser extension or preference blocked the bank verification. After re-adding the method, check all affected workspace links.

The card is expired or detected as expired

If the card expiration date is correct but Crisp still marks it as invalid, remove the card and add it again. Complete the payment-provider verification again, then check the method’s status and workspace links. If it is still invalid, contact support.

The card has insufficient funds

Make sure the card is active and has enough funds for the subscription charge. New cards sometimes need to be activated by the bank before online payments are accepted.

The bank blocked the authorization

Some banks block recurring subscription payments or international authorizations by default. Contact your bank and ask them to authorize the Crisp payment.

The wrong card is linked to the workspace

If several teammates manage billing, confirm that the valid payment method is linked to the correct workspace in Settings → Workspace Settings → Billing.

After adding or replacing a payment method, check the workspace link even if Crisp linked it automatically. A method on your account does not confirm that the intended workspace uses it.

Payment succeeded but the plan is not active

Check the workspace in Settings → Billing → Plans & Subscriptions and confirm the payment method is linked to that workspace. A card authorization or a payment for another workspace does not confirm this subscription is active.

If the charge completed but the expected plan is still missing, contact support with the workspace, billing account email, payment date, and invoice or payment reference. Do not make another payment just to retry activation.

To stop renewal instead, use cancellation settings.
